Jane Austen and her grammar and spelling checker

A recent research led by an English literature professor in Oxfor cites evidence that the famous English novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) had so awful knowledge of the grammar and spelling that her works had to be rewritten by a grammar and spell checker. Kathryn Sutherland, professor in the university of Oxford declares: Usually, it is believed that Jane Austen had a perfect style. Her brother Henry declared in 1818 a sentence to be famous: “everything works out perfect from her pen”, and literary critics continue sharing this opinion. Nevertheless, after reading her manuscripts, there are evidences that contradicts such precision” affirms Sutherland, who studied 1.100 pages not published by Jane Austen. The manuscripts reject the reputation of perfection of the writer: there are blots, crossings out, messiness, disorder, grammar and spelling mistakes, obscurities, oversights, etc. It is discovered her ungrammatical writing that contrasts with the polished style of her published works. “Therefore, this evidence makes way to think that another person was strongly involved in the process of edition between the manuscript and the printed book, probably this person was the copy editor, critic and proofreader William Gifford. However, this fact will not damage the reputation of Austen, because as Sutherland says: “she was even better at writing dialogue and conversation than the edited style of her published novels suggest..” I honestly think Jane Austen was a gifted writer and her talent will not be tarnished by the fact she had not proper spelling or grammar skills, maybe this was due to the lack of proper education women used to had during the nineteenth century, Jane Austen continues to be one of the best and most beloved of the English writers for ever.
